Hi all I would like to ask what your opinion is around the P405 course and its accreditation; I am currently looking for a provider of this course and most cite BOHS P405. However, a few providers have came back saying their course is P405 but not under the supervision of a BOHS invigilator. Would you as an employer or inspector be happy with staff qualified in a P405 course that was not run or invigilated by BOHS. I can see nothing in the regs that says it must be BOHS. The other companies are not some 'Mickey mouse' outfit, but rather and have provided a very competitive quote with good evidence probably the best proposed training package, all invigilated by outside provider. So I guess my long winded question is, do you know of any reason why a P405 course has to be BOHS invigilated? Thanks for anyone taking the time to reply to this.

Hmm, I think if the exam is not run by BOHS then it cannot be a true 'P405'. From their website: "BOHS is the only society in the UK which represents occupational hygiene as a distinct discipline, and our Faculty of Occupational Hygiene is the only UK examining board for practical and professional qualifications in occupational hygiene." Sounds a bit fishy to be honest, though I'm open to being proved wrong. Ask your provider who will provide the examination and certificate? In fact, let us know the answer if you don't mind because if they are genuine (I'm assuming they would be based in Europe?) then we may all be able to save some cash. I'd be surprised though.

I did the P405 a couple of years back and found it a very useful course as it gave me a greater understanding of asbestos, asbestos works and the management of asbestos in buildings. I did mine with AAA Training and found the course very good. I think they run courses around the country although I did mine in London.

Entirely possible in thoeory for a 3rd party provider to run the practical and theoretical elements of the course and then involve BOHS (as the examining board) for the examination part?

If you are in any doubt check with the HSE (as we have done so in the past)

Thank you all for the comments so far. I was just wondering if anyone had done the P405 course that was not BOHS. I am unsure if I can put training companies on here so I we are not allowed can a moderator please remove it. The company is called UKasl. It’s based in the UK and has a good client testimonial, including UK universities, councils etc. So that is why I am thinking it has some weight behind it, though those might be from awareness sessions rather than P405 courses. The company in questions is several thousand pounds cheaper than other quotes. its course outline seems more indepth than others provided and it is also a member of the Independent Asbestos training providers and United Kingdom Asbestos training association. I see nothing in the acop or guidance documents that say P405 course has to be accredited by BOHS, but agree that this being the industry standard then it is what people expect. The examination will be independently marked by an approved external organisation; the practical assessment will be administrated, set and marked by the training provider and tutor of the course. A good idea to speak to the HSE, I will do that also.

Better to speak with BOHS. P405 is their syllabus and their exam.

I took mine last year in Manchester through a company called AEC, very good at getting to the key points. I guess it'll be like UKATA, PASMA, IPAF etc; nothing set in stone but it's what the industry expects and at least you (and those you have to deal with) know what standard you've been trained to.
