Hello
Came across a Health & Safety Advisers job advertised where the client demanded the job hunter be obviously Nebosh qualified and have The CITB SITE MANAGEMENT TRAINING SCHEME (SMSTS) card. I don't personally myself think the SMSTS is necessary as it only touches the surfaces of the Health & Safety Advisers role. Just like to know any views on the subject or would you think it would be beneficial.

I would presume the role was for the construction industry so they may want someone who has gone through this process to prove they have worked in construction for a while and had a step up the qualification ladder starting at SMSTS then NEBOSH Next thing they will want is the SSSTS
Did an agency put this advert out?
Only guessing can not see why they would ask for this if you find out let us know

Alan,
The reason this has been put in the JD, is quite rightly, as pointed out already, because the job role is probably in the construction industry. All of the major construction companies have signed up for this scheme, and have installed this as part of there policy for employement for all staff. Also, as this has become widespread, the company advertising, might be working on these major contruction sites, so they might be their clients requirements? afterall, they are not going to check every persons certification and C.V`s on attending their sites, this would be a logistical nighmare.
I do not believe this is about competency, this is about ticking the boxes, and probably appeasing insurers (just guessing that bit though). In order to get your card, you just need to either have an NVQ Level 4 or CMIOSH membership. Complete the touch screen test for the scheme, send through your certs, and you will most definatley recieve a card.
Hope this helps.

I did this course and found it very informative it is higher than the SSSTS course and gives a good insight to the running of a Construction site. It was attended by Site Managers,Surveyors, graduates and Site Foreman. I found the role plays good because you were matched up with varying types of people where you could assist each other with your various strengths. It was taking by a FIOSH a person I found to be helpful and when he did not know the answer he found it out. It does not get you any CSCS or CPCS card but purely for the course content it is well worth it.
Regards Alex
