A recent article in SHP magazine refers to the prosecution of INEOS following an injury to a worker. The worker was following company guidelines and wearing gloves while metal working on a machine. His glove caught on a rotating part of the machine and he suffered injuries to his fingers.
In prosecution, new guidance on the wearing of gloves while metal working introduced "nearly 6 years ago" is used as evidence against INEOS.
I have been looking through PPE regs and PUWER and cannot find the source of the new guidance.

Can anyone direct me to the relevant legislation and section please?

Thanks.
Kevin

I believe it is this, dated 11/04
EIS2 ( engineering information sheet 2) - Accidents at metalworking lathes using emery cloth - Overall sleeves should be tight-fitting and gloves should never be worn.

Additionally these other documents refer to not wearing gloves

INDG365 Working safely with metalworking fluids – page 3, section - skin protection (NB: Gloves can be hazardous if worn near rotating machinery or parts).

HSG129 Health and Safety in engineering workshops – various references to not wearing gloves if there is a risk of entanglement.

Kevin

There was nothing particularly "new" about the guidance published 6 years ago.

This principle has been around for the 30+ years since I joined HSE.

For example, chain mail glove for non-knife hand if using vertical band knife to cut cloth - not an entanglement risk.

In contrast no use of glove if using band saw
