Evening everyone. Could you advise if there is a guidance document or a British Standard on the format of a safe system of work? I'm thinking along the line of the Risk Assessment Guidance - 5 Steps to Risk Assessment. SR

SR A safe system of work (SSoW) is a generic term for a number of different systems. For example, it could be a method statement, works package plan, SOP or anything else you care to mention. So, I'm not really sure what you are after? The RA guidance you have mentioned is a step-by-step format, which is usually incorporated into a SSoW, but I cannot think of anything else which may be relevant to your query.

The definition of SSOW, MS has been debated on the forums numerous times. As Ray has said, there is no standard definition of a SSOW or a SOW under S2 (2)(a). There is a definition of sorts in IOSH Principles (a formal procedure which identifies safe methods of work to ensure that hazards are eliminated and remaining risks are minimised) but this has no legal standing. Leaving aside what different people consider to be a SSOW, the format will vary depending on, among other things, the complexity of the risks and the task. It could be a simple bulleted list of ‘do’s and don’ts’, or something more substantial. In general I suggest the simpler the better, as they are more likely to be read, understood and followed, but don’t sacrifice clarity for brevity. Hope that makes sense?
