I would be interested to know whether a lot of health & safety advisors/ consultants use these? are they useful for training, information passing etc? the quick access and easy availability make it appealing but do employees actually respond and listen to this method over classroom teaching and e-mail/ paper briefings? Are there any recommendations on maybe the best applications to access and use? All thoughts and comments gratefully received on the subject

I wouldn't use it stand alone. I certainly wouldn't use it at all if it depended on staff using their own personal equipment. I'm currently making films of all of our SSoW (Safe Systems of Work), these will be shown in conjunction with training in the task and briefings on the risk assessment. It's just another way of getting the message across.

I have a few nice little apps relevant to H&S: 'My Wellbeing' is a new one I downloaded the other day about Wellbeing There are lots of first aid apps - e.g. First Aid by St Johns Chem Safety is a big set of material safety data sheets. Then of course there are the general office apps such as Pocket Informant to manage appointments and Docs to Go which is a version of MS Office. I can only vouch that these are useful for me as a H&S adviser. I have not used them for the workforce. I think it might be greeted with a bit of contempt if I started encouraging people to use Apple devices when most of them are on relatively low pay. Another thing I have thought about doing is podcasts. A great form of media - but again I am not sure what the take up would be

It would from me, I'm an Android man. ;-)

If they are staff with works email addresses you could send the link in an email with a read receipt?

Decibel and Lux meters as well as as PowerPoint slide viewer. Spend most of my spare time on angry birds though.

Thank you very much for the advice and also the links for applications I feel that I-Phone applications could be utilised in helping with health and safety training. Useful to use as a aid, not the sole training resource but in conjunction with other teaching aids - just finding the right applications is a minefield - has IOSH considered publishing a top 10 list of applications to help professionals in their choice and giving people to chance to write reviews on them? I think the comment regarding the angry birds/ paper toss are spot on as I have both of those :>) I heard of a heat sensor application that determines heat stress but cannot find it to download? The HSE published an article regarding something similar that was available as a free download?

Other Android applications that are handy; ConvertPad (for converting a whole lot of things such as weights / temperature/ fuel consumption / velocity / acceleration/ force / pressure to name but a few!) Flashlight (surprisingly handy if you don't have a torch!) Goggles (if you want to find out the name of a building / book etc...simply take a photo and the app scans the image and provides information if it's available) PDF viewer (so you can see those pesky PDF files on the go...like bus or train timetables!) Poynt (to locate businesses, restaurants etc near to your location) Tricorder (basic noise meter, records solar activity, compass) Wi-fi analyser (to locate the hot spots and drop out locations in your house). Personally I'm a Farm Story person with my own little plot of land that has some cows, sheep, pigs plus various crops. Hoping to "buy" a farmhouse soon once I've collected enough coins!
