I have a doctors surgery that has a single staircase to the offices upstrairs, under the stairs they keep the computer servers. All doors upstairs are fire doors but I am concerned that there is only one exit and the electrics under that fire route. Should I be concerned? They have said if I advice them they will put in an additional fire escape.

Simon, electrical equipment is a potential source of ignition and as such should not be kept under stairs forming part of an escape route. Rather than asking for a new fire escape to be provided, would it not be more cost effective to relocate your servers?

Hi Simon Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you say that they will put an additional escape route in if you advise them. So are you proving professional advise to this surgery or acting as a concerned patient? If it’s the former then as you are no doubt aware the assessment should be performed by a competent person, so you may need to seek expert advise. If it’s the latter then you could simply suggest that they have their assessment reviewed by a competent person.

Many 10s of 1000s of domestic and commercial premises have the electrical consumer unit under the stairs, including transformer and control housings for alarm systems, CCTV etc. If this is ground to first floor stair then, depending on local circumstances, this might not be an issue? The simpler solution in any event could be to enclose the equipment in situ with suitable fire protection construction. Formation of a secondary escape route......???!

Thanks for that, it would be better to enclose the ignition source.

I suggest 1 hour fire resistance under stairs cupboard, with a 30 minute fr door and sign stating fire door keep shut on the outside face of the door. Is there a fire alarm system with AFD? Also desirable with sounders on first floor. This is my opinion not having seen the premises.

JohnV, not disagreeing really, but surely the fact that there is a source of ignition under the stairs is not really the issue - it's the presence of a fuel that would give me cause for concern Or are you thinking the servers will cause the stairs to ignite?
