Hi All I am attempting to prepare a flow chart in respect of CDM documentation and may develop an excel spreadsheet for project managers etc to utilise In this case the cdmc is not an external body but is a direct employee of the client I have up to now: Assuming all parties are aware of their duties under CDM F10 completed by cdmc signed by client Pre construction information is prepared Goes out to tender (what would be the normal timescale here?) CDMc receives and reviews construction phase again would this normaly take 2 weeks or so? Client appoints Principal Contractor following a PQQ references etc Pre start meeting Construction works commence Ongoing succession of meetings as is necessary your thoughts please? i am also trying to establish what would be suitable timeframes for each stage Many thanks D

Some suggestions: There is no Designer duty discussion or Designer/CDM-C interraction process in your list. You seem to miss the concept of PCI to the right people (that includes Designers) at the right time. ("PCI" is not entirely the same concept as the old "pre-tender" plan). No mention of gathering information for inclusion/update of the H&S File, which can start at the design phase and throughout the construction phase. Determination of the time allowed to various parties to mobilise and prepare is a key consideration and is Project specific. Consideration of initial CPP returned via tender would not always or usually be the same CPP accepted as sufficiently developed to allow the Construction Phase to commence. CDM (as with a Project) is not a linear process, rather it is iterative and to some extent cyclic. Whilst there are several CDM milestones that can be applied to any Project Plan, your approach (in terms of overall compliance) seems a wee bit simplistic.

And don't forget that no CDM job is undertaken in isolation; so additional interfaces with fire, asbestos law and all the other laws etc that affect a particular job are needed ---- noting that the CDMC has no place in any other law but CDM ---- A simple extra box on the primary flow chart pointing to these secondary areas is all that is needed initially

Ron What is a CPP it is not in 2007 regulations??:-) David Timings for stages really depend on the size of contract and do remember the time permitted for mobilisation etc after award of contract. A gant chart really is the best layout as many stages overlap and are not totally sequential. Please remeber also that the Site Waste Management Plan Regs can also come quickly into effect especially when high value equipment is being installed as a project. I have seen a number of jobs over £500k lasting less than 30 days and no thought was given to these regs. Notification need is irrelevasnt to waste management.

David, such flow charts already exist. They are in a book called "CDM Regulations 2007 Procedures Manual- 3rd Edition" by Stuart D. Summerhayes and published by Blackwell. Apart from the charts the book is not as useful as the Guide produced by APS (in my opinion). PH2
