Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help with some guidance re: CDM Training, but for our specific position. We are involved in the construction industry (although we are software engineers in the most part) and are well used to acting as subcontractor on major notifiable projects. We are now starting to act as principle contractor. To date I have been keeping a close eye on the projects where we are fulfilling this role, and almost all times where we have acted as principle contractor it has been a contractual requirement by our client, and not due to the project being notifiable. I am looking to provide training to Project Managers and Sales/Account Managers on CDM specifically where we are acting as principle contractor, with some reinforcement of what CDM 2007 is, and the roles that exist (to reinforce previous training) I am wondering about doing this internally, but these people are spread out over a number of offices, and getting all the Project managers in one office at the same place at the same time is tricky, if there was an external course that might be a lot easier. I'd be interested in what experiences others might have. Thanks, Eddie.

Eddie With regard to CDM courses, take a look at the Association for Project Safety (APS) website - training. www.aps.org.uk You might want to consider the 5 day SMSTS course for your Project Managers as well.

Agree with Adrians comment SMSTS for managers SSSTS for supervisors is a good starter and you can claim 50% back with Construction Skills. i recommend you include First Aid, Fire Marshal and Asbestos Awareness. Email me direct if you wish to discuss other items you need to take into consideration. Tony

This Client contractual obligation can only refer to you being the "main" or "lead" contractor I believe. The term "Principal" (note spelling) is, in the context of CDM Regs, exclusively associated with Notifiable Projects. There are a number of training companies who deliver good CDM training, some with real passion and commitment. Sadly, the converse is probably also true. Areas of particular focus in your line of work will include asbestos risk, and the various minefields of responsibility for sub-contractor appointment competencies (probably one of the main risk-transfer reasons your Client choose to appoint you in a lead contractor role!). These are only 2 aspects where you will need to look beyond training and consider the competencies, processes, procedures and safe systems you have or need to establish) in your Organisation. As a first step, you might want to conduct a gap analysis against CDM and ACoP (free from HSE) requirements. This will enable you to approach a training provider with particular aspects you need to address? If you impress upon your senior managers the potential business risks associated with compliance gap issues (and what that might mean to them when things go wrong in terms of reputation, future business and enforcement) they might appreciate the need to make themselves available for a few meetings and training sessions!!!

Tony There is no grant recovery if this is not an "in scope" comapny paying levy. I agrre that the SMSTS and SSSTS are good courses as a starter. Bob
