In line with one of my pet themes on this forum, I would ask the new MD if he or she planned to emulate the bosses shown on TV programmes like "Undercover Boss" or "Back to the Floor".
I mentioned this theme the other day in the ongoing topic “HSE…..sign of things to come”. Such stints would enable the new top person to get a good idea about how the organisation really operates (or perhaps doesn’t!), what the problems are and how to resolve them. In some of the TV programmes the bosses featured (whether working covertly or not) sometimes find that very basic problems in their organisations have either not been identified by line management or are being left unresolved.
In the same topic, Clairel pointed out that HSE inspectors should always go and look at actual working conditions, and also talk to employees irrespective of their rank or role. The same advice I reckon applies equally to the senior bosses of organisations and would tend to work to everyone’s benefit, including employees, managers and customers. Also, without the presence of any TV camera people, there would be less distraction for senior bosses and the ‘shop floor’ people involved.
