I have recently being trying to get into the offshore industry for the last 6 months as a safety advisor. I’ve posted my CV on countless Oil & Gas recruitment sites and also sent it speculatively to companies to no avail. It seems that anyone new to the industry isn’t wanted as all I get is “sorry your application has been unsuccessful” is anyone else experiencing the same problem s. I thought the industry would welcome qualified HSE professional. It certainly looks like it’s not what you know, it’s who you know! Any ideas on best route to go would be greatly welcomed

Nothing has changed tam!

Experience will always take precedence in this kind of industry and as any other currently positions are far and few for both production and exploration areas.

Hi Tam
I would suggest that moving straight to an offshore rotational safety role from outside industry is very difficult. Best to go for an onshore role as SHEQ Advisor first, which will allow you some exposure via audits, visitis, projects, training etc, then take it from there. It will also give you an idea of whether or not it's really for you, it's not all peaches and cream and I know some people have strange idea of what they're getting into and find it's not for them.

good luck anyway

Hi Tam,

I worked offshore for over 18years and basically no company will touch unless you have actually done a trip. So how do you get a trip offshore? the only thing I can suggest is keep badgering companies at the start of Spring through to about now after that nothing much happens due to weather etc.

Hope this helps.

I have also been trying to break into the offshore industry. I had considered taking the Basic Safety Induction and Emergency Training course (BOSIET). However i'm not sure if this will help.

I have moved offshore after having 9.5 years of HSE expirience in Logistics, Construction, Marine, Central HSE roles, etc. However I noticed that I have to learn from beginning. certanly my auditing and investigation skills helped me to learn quickly but it took 1 year before I became stand alone HSE advisor on a platform.

Most of the employers looking for the person who may start working alone already on his second trip, if not on first. This will include skills such as Radiation Protection Supervisors, Life Saving Equipment Maintenance, Deluge Systems, Emergency response coordination, etc.

BOSIET and offshore medical is minimum pass to travel offshore. Everybody including service staff have to have BOSIET. In order to get a job offshore you need to start with the company who provides services offshore as well as onshore, and make frequent visits. Then try to get offshore job, within your company first.
