I have presently given a brief presentation on the requirements of SG4-10 and included in this presentation I stated that if a scaffolder is more than 1 metre away from an exposed edge and his platform is fully boarded out then he is not required to attatch his lanyard to an anchorage point (which may be the case when working on a large dimensional birdcage scaffold) I have since been informed that this is not the case and that a scaffolder whilst erecting/dismantling or modifying a scaffold must be 100% clipped on at all times unless there is a fully boarded out platform and a single handrale in position regardless of the distance he may be from an exposed edge. If anybody on this forum could enlighten me a little more on this issue then I would fully appreciate this.

Thank you

I agree with you. SG4-10 is quite clear that if they are working without a fully boarded platform or without guard rail protection then they must remain clipped onto a suitable anchor point. Therefore if it is fully boarded and with guard rail protection then they do not need to be clipped onto a suitable anchor point. However, if they encroach from that 'safe zone' to within 1m of an unprotected area then fall protection must be used.

This is what I have been seeing on sites I have recently visited and I've not seen anything to say that this has changed. Where did this information come from, and did they give a reason why?

If you are working within sg10: 04 you must be clipped on at all times until the scaffold is fully complete I.e no gap greater than 470mm, protected access point. Just finished a course taught be a NASC instructer. Hope this helps.

The information about NOT having to remained clipped on when at more than a distance of 1 metre from an open edge was in a recent SHP magazine titled Passive Resistance when it mentions that additional precautions specified when working in the safe zone include clipping on if reaching below the guardrail, encroaching within 1 metre of an opening, leading edge or risk of a fall. Have I miss-interpreted this statement ?

Right, firstly, I did not place the correct information in my last post. Secondly, the article sjpenn is referring to, I have know idea when this was published but, I can give you the most up to date guidance I have, as I have just finished a course with a NASC instructor.

Insert taken directly from NASC guidance SG4: 10 -

"The scaffolders 'safe zone'

It is no longer permitted for a scaffolder to transverse along a platform without any form of fall protection. Scaffolders must focus upon creating a 'safe zone' with collective fall protection as a priority when working at height, with the minimum of:

- A fully boarded and correctly supported platform without gaps where someone could fall ; and,

- a single guardrail (950mm above the platform) where there is a risk of fall."

I think this clears up any confusion.
