Hi there,

I have an odd request for help or suggestion....

I have been asked to hold an "away day" for our senior managers based on H&S, they have all attended either IOSH managing safely or IOSH directing safely and don't want it to be just another training session. Equally I don't have a budget to bring in any external bodies for any part of the day.

I am hoping that someone out there will have maybe run something that they can offer as a suggestion to help me with the day. I would also like them to leave having felt engaged and not Bored!

I am planning on running part of the day as an exercise of dealing with a "staged, but real life emergency" and having the groups run through what they would do in a short time frame only feeding back at the end when we can compare outcomes and thought patterns.

However, I am struggling for anything more.

Please help!!!

How about a mock H & S trial, if you can get some outside help for free?

Try a visit to a local factory or site , on which they may not have come across before

A site visit might be good, do you know anyone who could help with a mock trial? I've never been to one before?

Mock trials are excellent but you may need some external expertise here to pull it off - but they do hit home and can be very funny as well as having the necessary impact.

A cheaper option for you

www.gowerpub.com

Particular publications:-

Training Sessions on Occupational Safety
Human Factors in Safety (triggers for training)
Health and Safety Games for Trainers

Hope this helps?

I participated in a mock trial at my local H & S group's annual training day.

Some of your own employees would need to be briefed as the injured party, witnesses, etc but you would need help from a solicitor (which may cost, depending on your acquaintance with anyone suitable).

I was one of the 'magistrates', along with one other and another solicitor to guide us mere mortals.

I have looked on the gower site, i can't find any on specific H&S training games, you don't have a link or a title of a book do you?

I would suggest a visit to Fire & Rescue services who are always good value not only to demonstrate what they do but also information on Fire Risk Assessments.

Thanks, we do have a lot of contact with fire and rescue, they recently did a training exercise in one of our high rise blocks of flats and accidentally flooded it! We now spend way too much time with them!!

I have not done anything like this but, what a great opportunity you have in getting the undivided attention of senior management and Directors. Unless your workplace has no H&S issues, then I would base your scenario around an issue (or issues) you have with senior management just not getting the point of some real H&S aspect you have, which is down to management not the employees.

Perhaps you could get them to role play the injured person, a union rep, the manager who has to respond, an onlooker who is affected, someone to play you ( as in the H&S Manager caught between a rock and a hard place). You – yourself could play the role of the HSE and interview each one in turn at the end, to make them think about what has happened from their perspective. Ie the effects of the accident on the injured person, his (or her) family, friends colleagues. The effect on the eye witness, shock to them, then concern that they may have played a part etc. You could get the person playing you to do an accident investigation, then you as the HSE come and interview everyone. Give each of the players a card of information about their characters, from the effects on them and they way they may think, to what may happen in the future. I would get the most senior person present to play the injured person ( the others will pay attention to them and take the role seriously), they will be the most effective in communicating the issues the injured person has, from being rushed to get a job done to the effects on their family life.

Then you could sit down at the end and debate what the organisation could do to prevent this or similar things happening, weave into this the issues you have and what you would like changed ( ie make them think it was mostly their ideas). Prize for the best acting? Something they can put on their desk to remind them of the day.

So a bit like a murder mystery “who did it”, just H&S based. – My guess is it was the supervisor, in the yard with the lead pipe ( he gave himself lead poisoning ) ;0}

What fun - Think I better go back to job hunting now !

PS – I would take this off site to ensure none of the players are nabbed! – They will not want to turn their phones off, so find somewhere there is naturally no signal – nice food is always good in the middle of the day – helps relaxed conversation- but not too relaxed.

Thats a really good idea, thank you. We will be off site, not sure I can guarantee no signal, plus if there were an emergency, there will be no one senior around!

I'll have a think about how i could put something together like this and obviously need the buy in for role play!!

Good luck with the job hunting.

Where are U based? As I am confident that your local IOSH branch may have good people who could help at no cost and local legal companies/suppliers may be interested

This is a gem of an opportunity so please plan and plan again additionally use 'money'/'profit' and personal gain as your base as that's what business run on. Moral issues; especially today; are not important to most [in my view]

Best of luck!

We are a housing trust based in Warrington. Do you have any idea of anyone I could contact.

I know I have a good opportunity, and want it to be the best it can be.
