Can someone provide me with the definition of hard hats. Our engineers work in restricted spaces and we provide each of them with bump caps to use. We need to put up some signs to make the engineers aware that certain areas require them to wear a bump cap.

I am struggling to find mandatory signs which state bump caps to be worn, however I have a lot of spare signs which say "wear hard hats". However is a hard hat a safety helmet, bump cap, something else or the term covering all of these?

Why not head protection?

That would be what I would buy next, however if I can use my large collection of wear hard hat signs, that would save me having to spend more money on head protection signs. But what exactly is a hard hat?

The The Construction (Head Protection) Regulations 1989 say:

(2) In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires, “suitable head protection” means head protection which—

(a)is designed to provide protection, so far as is reasonably practicable, against foreseeable risks of injury to the head to which the wearer may be exposed;

(b)after any necessary adjustment, fits the wearer; and

(c)is suitable having regard to the work or activity in which the wearer may be engaged

In the meantime design and print your own signs here: http://www.online-sign.com/

Further to the above good response by m, there is a standard for bump caps (EN 812:1997) which you may wish to adhere with. At the end of the day head protection is just that and should be appropriate to the conditions and hazards - job done.

Hard Hats are typically Safety Helmets to standards EN 397 or EN 14052. Unlike bump caps they have suspension to allow for significant impact (seem to remeber 6kg ball but could be wrong). Bum caps may or may not have padding but no suspension.

Get your own safety signs made to order. Lots of companies do that - try a search engine.

Do you know of anyone working in the rail industry, particularly in one of the TOCs with thier own locomotive maintenance activity. They use bump caps when working under a locomotive and perhaps they can point you in the direction of a sign supplier. I think that is what you wanted rather than a lecture on the difference between Safet helmets, and bump caps.

Sorry Bob, I read the first line of the question which specifically asked for the definition of a hard hat.

John, I read all the posting not just the first line. The question relates to and I quote 'Our engineers work in restricted spaces and we provide each of them with bump caps to use. We need to put up some signs to make the engineers aware that certain areas require them to wear a bump cap'. My suggestion can give him chapter and verse of real places where the kit is used. Perhaps I am being a bit pedantic, but there you go.
