Is there anywhere I can find out more information on this area? I'm looking to ascertain what courses there are available for this industry and what if any guidance there is out there which relates to farming and agriculture. Thanks Martin

Try LANTRA - http://www.lantra.co.uk/Health-and-safety.aspx I've come across them in relation to their work on traffic management schemes for road repairs and they seem to have all aspects of the agriculture / horticulture / forestry markets sewn up.

As mentioned already the agricultural pages of the HSE website provide much of the legal requirements. "Farmwise" is an excellent guide and is the one I generally discuss with farmers. Land-based training is organised by Lantra through local training providers, and provides training on the full range of requirements including tractor-driving, forklifts, atv's, chainsaws, pesticides, etc.

Martin, 'agriculture' is a very big subject. Other than the previous mention of HSE website, Lantra ect. If you can be a bit more specific perhaps we can give you more specific advice?

Clairel, sorry I know its a bit vague, I'm trying to ascertain want farmers are doing with regarding to Health & Safety along with try to get an idea what is out there for them. Putting it into an example if I had a small construction company there are various Health & Safety Courses out there that I could do. If I had a farm that is employing 15-20 people, what H&S courses/training/information would be out there for me?

See "Vocational Qualifications - CERTIFICATES IN HEALTH AND SAFETY (AGRICULTURE & HORTICULTURE) LEVELS 2 & 3" at http://www.healthandsafe...o.uk/LANTRAH%26SVRQs.pdf

Any chance of pointing me in the direction of this info? M Most situations, laws etc. Are the same for all work areas e.g. Manual Handling, Fire, F-aid, PPE, COSHH, DSE, PUWER, LOLER [the list goes on] etc so start there; as agriculture in my view [I deal with many aspects of agriculture] is not significantly different than any other work place and the Forestry Commission & AFAG have some good guidance I still stick to my comments as noted before e.g. Unless there is a willing horse then nothing will be done irrespective of any guidance---- I know of a farmer recently who was given a free [yep free!] road on his land but would not cooperate in other areas with those who gave him the free road!

BBC Countryfile this coming Sunday (Nov 20th) at 6.25pm will feature one of HSE's 'Safety and Health Awareness Days' (SHAD) held for farmers recently at Adam Henson's farm in Gloucestershire. These events are held to demonstrate common hazards and prevention means for typical farm accidents, and are HSE's current means of proactive intervention with the agricultural industry. (It will also be on Catch Up TV or i-Player)
