I am looking for sensible pragmatic advice on how any forum users have managed this or a similar issue.
We run a 24 hour operation with a mix of office work typically 0800-1800 and engineering work, maintaining our work equipment which operates 24/7. We have adequate First Aid cover during office hours for both the office and engineering work but out of ours typically 1800-0800 we have 2 engineers on site and a contracted security/reception person. Before anyone asks they don’t work 14 hour shifts, we have shift changeovers at 0700 and 1900.
At night the engineers only perform light maintenance but this does involve electrical work and on occasion working short duration from step ladders, these tasks are adequately controlled by Safe Systems of Work in my opinion.
The engineering team rotate so the same 2 people do not always work together and they of course take holidays at times. They may be working alone at times but are in radio contact with each other and security/reception.
Ideally I would want them all trained on First Aid at Work as this would guarantee cover but would be very problematic to organise with shift workers and very costly, I am instead considering if Emergency First Aid at Work is adequate training. The contracted security/reception person is not FA trained.
I am in the process of updating the First Aid RA and was hoping for any advice or examples of how adequate FA cover has been achieved in similar circumstances.

The one day Emergency First Aid at Work course would be fine for what you are suggesting.
However :)... It all depends on risk assessment really. Stuff like emergency service response times, hazards experienced and the type of injury that is foreseeable might suggest a higher level of cover, but I would guess EFAW would suffice........

We made it part of our contract with the security company that the security guards would be first-aid trained. We also made first-aid training mandatory for one of the key shift roles.

EFAW is what I would recommend.

Hello Dave, Kate and teh boy, thanks for your replies security are contractors and are not trained at this time, maybe when we re-contract we can stipulate. I think I will look into the EFAW option a bit more.
Thanks
