Can someone help me, is there a standard about crane drivers who have passed their basic crane driving course then they go on a specific crane on plant, who can pass them out as competent on that crane is it a crane driver who drives that crane or a is it plant crane instructor.

Just to try to get this right.

You have sent someone on a Crane operators course and they passed?

You have then earmarked them to operate a specific crane?

Is the operator of that crane a competent operator? Would they happily sign this new person of as capable and competent for operating the crane?

If so then get them to sign a internal certificate to say this.

I am taken that this is an internal crane used for your own purposes as if it were being hired out to sites then you would have to go down the CITB route and get CPCS cards.

Hope it helps a little.

Alex's idea is a good one and one that should be considered the only comment I would make is this; -

These days just because a person is a competent crane driver does not mean that they are a competent trainer nor assessor as they are separate skills and skills that would be needed in such a case, noting that if something negative happened in the future a question about training etc would be asked

Yes Bob

1. New crane driver goes to crane school gets a crane license
2. Needs to be passed out on the specific crane he will be driving
Who should pass him out ?
1. A crane trainer from the company(Identified individual with trainer skills) or
2. A guy who drives the crane as his job

Could i have your thoughts please

On cranes, look for right CPCS category first, then check, are they on red (trained operator) card or blue competency card (done their SPMO NVQ and log book complete).

Familiarisation on the machine is different to the initial training. Same with MEWPS, you do IPAF 3A & 3B and people think you can jump on any scissor or boom lift and start working. No, they need familiarisation and demonstration.

You simply need a competent person from the machine supplier to do a complete handover including rigging and de-rigging in all likely configurations. Your AP / Crane Supervisor designs lift plans but crane operator needs to know how to rig to suit the plan.

All kit suppliers whether they are hire companies (tool, MEWPS etc) or cranes, whoever supplied the kit will expect to have to supply a suitable and sufficient handover. Record it on a suitable form (suppliers of the kit normally have a template) and keep a record on file. Last resort is to pay a training company to do the same which is fine, but guess what, trainers don't know their way around 600 different machines either and will have to scratch their heads for a few hours with a manual and guidance from the supplier.
