Hi,
I have an interview for Friday though a short notice, and there will be presentation on this topic.
"As the Health and Safety manager, you will be required to review, develop and implement H&S policy and procedure across the company’s property estate and for over 1500 employees." detail in the form of an action plan, how you would ensure the company meets and exceeds its health and safety requirements and commitments.
please advise on this interview and presentation title.
Many Thanks

I'm away from the office until Thursday so can only give a short reply

I think you need to need to give the readers a little more on the employer.

I would have thought that this organisation should already have a relatively robust HSW management system - their website may indicate whether e.g. accredited to OHSAS 18001 or alternate standard.

If not I'd probably start by doing a baseline audit against the principles in HSG65.

Consider SWOT analysis on current systesm identifying high low medium risks etc and utilising HSG65. Also consider communication, auditing, monitoring, training within the plan. Title should be around HSE Management Systems - development and implementation or something
Good luck

Also - don't want to be picky but make sure your spelling is accurate as you post title should read advice not advise. Also practice, practice and more practice - I just went through a similar process and it was a strict 10 mins and I practiced my presentation a number of times and when I did it at interview I was confident with my message and was spot on 10 mins - commented on positively by the audience

I would take the approach that as I would be new to the organisation I would be unwise to have any preconceived notion of what is needed for the specific activities within that organisation's operations. So the first activity would of necessity be a fact finding exercise. Then, assuming that the organisation already has some health and safety policies and procedures in place, to ascertain what these are, rather that attempt to start from scratch.

For me the approach would be|:
1. Familiarise myself with the organisation's operation. Without this I won't know what I am looking at.
2. Review the current situation and identify where it is suitable for purpose and where, in my view, improvements are needed.
3. Rank these in order of priority, i.e. deal with the most significant risks first.
4. Develop a plan of action to implement the necessary changes
5. Present my findings to management so that they can agree my plan and make the necessary resources available. Agree a time scale with them. Agree a reporting procedure so that management has an overview of progress.
6. Given health and safety is an extremely broad topic I would include the need to identify where particular situations might need specialist support (or additional training for me) and a process for ensuring that this can be arranged.

I would keep the presentation very short and simple. I would actually not start to refer in any depth to different standards, on the basis that managers might not know what these are and this might cause confusion. Encourage questions.

Develop, yes. Review - in consultation with managers, employees and stakeholders. Implement? That's everyone else's job!!!!!
