I'm trying to find a document on guidence for the working time regs on breaks times. The one that the HSE links you to is very complexed to digest. Does anyone have anything in plain english they could send me.

Im trying to find out the legal minimum break entitlement over a 12 hour period.

Slightly confused, theres no mention of lunch breaks just minimum 20 minute break for every six hours worked.

If you worked a 12 hour shift surely you are entitled to more than 20 minutes?

No, just 20 minutes. That's the legal minimum.

There may be longer periods negotiated.

And night workers are different, generally 8-hour shifts maximum.

Not forgetting the 11 hour break a day between work periods.

That is...a 30 minute break for under 18's.
Sorry. It's Sunday. Non-Compos-Mentis.

David

If you enter the business link website and use the search facility, all of the information is there for you to see, and it is reasonably straightforward (depending on your sector)

The original link I provided (a simple Google to me a few seconds) provided you with a simple and accurate summary.

The entitlement for MOST, NOT ALL ADULT workers is 20 minutes for shifts of 6 hours or more, NOT 20 minutes EVERY 6 hours. And for young workers, 30 minutes for shifts lasting more than 4 1/2 hours, NOT 30 minutes EVERY 4 1/2 hours.

There are other requirements for drivers and mobile workers, although some LGV drivers have an exemption or derogation from standard VOSA rules on breaks and the use of tachographs

Most employers will accept the need for further breaks, and these can be and most often are, unpaid breaks. Similarly, many employers might have a contractual requirement to take at least 30 minutes lunch break, but again unpaid, and this almost invariably forms the entitlement to a break under WTR.
