When can you use or upload an Avatar? everytime I try to use one, I get "click here for avatars", but when I do, none are available.
Is this related to the quantity of posts you have, or the type of membership you have?

The forums don't have any standard avatars (what a surprise!)
You have to upload a picture yourself and use that. There used to be a post telling you how to do this but as the search function seems to be broken (again) I can't find it to give you the link!

cbrpete - your avatar has not uploaded successfully.
Moderators do not have to approve them.
Sadly, this Moderator has no idea how to successfully upload an avatar - perhaps one of my colleagues will notice and add something to this topic.

I found the old thread - however unhelpfully it's in the members part of the forums, so no use to anyone who doesn't have access there! I'll try to help...
Go to "My Profile" and click "Modify Avatar". You then get a box that says "Enter URL of Avatar on Remote Server to Use".
What this means is that you aren't actually uploading the picture to the IOSH server. What you have to do is put in the web address (URL) of the picture you want to display.
You have to be careful here not to link to a picture on a site that doesn't allow linking. Effectively as I understand it, every time someone loads a page on the IOSH site with your avatar on, it takes up bandwidth from the site you have linked to. Some sites specifically disallow this - you can usually find it in their conditions of use at the bottom of their home page.
One way around this once you have selected your Avatar is to upload it to a photo-sharing site (Photobucket or Flickr or something like that) and then link to there.
To find the location of a picture, or to save it to your hard drive for uploading to a photo-sharing site, right click on it and it pulls up a menu that gives "Copy image location" or "save image as.." among the options.
To use a photo of your own, you have to upload it to a photo-sharing website first (making sure you comply with the IOSH rules on size and resolution) and then paste that link into the box on the My Profile page.
I hope that helps. It's really not as hard as I am sure I have made it sound!

But yet you still have one! The irony. Technology and IOSH are obviously not best friends, when phoning for tech support on amending IPD I was on hold for so long I had worked out how to fix the issue myself. The madness was I then had to explain how I had managed so they could pass it on to others! Come on IOSH it's not the 90's!!!! As a mod on phpBB forums (back in the 90s) I used to be able to edit profiles with superadmin login, this way I could fix the avatar issue myself, is this not possible on these forums?

Hello
The webteam thought they would shed some light on some of the topics that have been raised in this thread . The forums, as many of you know, do have limited functionality in some areas; this includes the Moderators’ actions, so their avatars were provided by the Web Team.
In reference to the FAQs, this is being reviewed and will change so that you will hopefully find it a more useful tool. If you have any suggestions of what you would find useful to include, we welcome your feedback.
We are also aware that the search function is not working properly at the moment. This utility was built by our previous developers, trying to fix it will not be as straightforward as we would like it to be because of contractual limitations. Nevertheless we are working hard to get this back up and running, please bear with us.
Best regards,
Webteam.
