Good Morning all, this is my first topic as a new member so please bear with me if the "green-ness" shows.
I was looking for data on scrap yards to help a give weight to some proposals i am going to make to a business on my very first unsupervised safety tour. I am a Diploma student in my first trainee post as it were, currently gaining experience unpaid with a local employer so really want to make a good and thorough impression and maybe it will help secure employment at the end of the trial. However after looking on the HSE's website and linked site's i'm struggling to find something comparable to try to encourage incident reporting- something i feel they currently need encouraging. Does anybody have any leads without encroaching on commercial sensitvity ? Thanks for reading and Merry xmas- all the best

In my own personnel experience, probably one of the poorest 'industries' for compliance (with most things), and I can't honestly imagine they are particularly rigorous regarding RIDDOR.
Bigger issues are fire, work at height and protecting the public (not forgetting other current UK wide issues with acceptance of stolen goods). You could start by asking to see Risk Assessments............
For balance, I do also appreciate that there are also some good breakers & merchants out there.
I'm sure you'll take care of what (in the way of content of reports etc.) you commit to putting your name to. I have on occasion come across these upaid reports being submitted by prospective contractors as evidence of audit by retained advisers!

Go onto the HSE website look under industries for Waste and you will find a wealth of information including a lengthy BOMEL report.
Remember that in terms of the relative risks of the industry as a whole and other sectors, there is a wide range of levels of compliance that the BOMEL report doesn't really address.
For examples the members of the Environmental Services Association have on average MUCH lower accident frequency rates, and even these need to be considered in the context of what ESA members do e.g. high risk refuse collection operations v relatively low risk activities at fixed waste management sites.
