Looking for a bit of advice here as to the requirements around calibrating Multigas Detectors. We have one detector that is used when maintenance staff have to get access to the undercroft where various services run. This is not a frequent event and usually occurs when we are required to run additional cables under the floors, last year it happened 4 or 5 times. I searched under various pieces of legislation but none seem to define a minimum period of calibration/testing. My issue is that the supplier states 6 monthly and some calibration companies state annually. For information the supplier is also one of the nearest calibration companies to my location so I would like a second opinion. Thank you in advance

The manufacturers of the current 4 gas detectors (Crowcon) which we have and the previous model we used (Honeywell) both recommend 6 monthly calibration periods. We have now purchased the calibration equipment so that can do this in-house (our staff have received training from the supplier). In addition to the 6 monthly calibration, our storeman also carries out a 'bump test' each time he issues a monitor for use. The bump test uses the same equipment as we use for calibration and tests the sensor in the monitors with a small sample of each gas to ensure that they are working properly.

Our MSA 4 gas monitor is a 6 monthly calibration. You could always try breathing on it as a quick check for the low O2 alarm (though its not recommended!!) LOL Phil

We also use MSA 4 gas monitors for rescue and training. They are on 6 monthly calibration. You should only use bump test equipment and calibration gas...that said it is legitimate for the user to do a 'bump test' by breathing on the monitor prior to use if they need to ensure themselves of the sound or alarm methods of the particular monitor.
