Hi all, looking for some help with regards to recording accident rates. Naturally I record all accidents that occur but just can't get my head around the calculation....some saying calculate hrs, some saying people and so on.
Does anyone have a formula that is easy enough to understand and any examples would be good.
In terms of calculating average number of employees each month, does this include those on holiday, off sick etc. or is it just those that have worked.
Thanks in anticipation....

Look at HSG 65 Appendix 6 which gives examples of formula's for the calculation of accident statistics.

We looked around at the options then just kept it simple; number of accidents / number of employees x 100. The multiplier depends on how many employees you have, we have around 170 all fullt ime. You might want to adjust if you have part time or job share

What do you want to do with these accident rates?
If you are using them for any comparisons it is important that you compare like with like. That's why some people will go for hours worked because as M says this accounts for part timers and sluing of figures in such situations. Often a multiplier is used to iron out differences between large and small companies, I have seen accidents per 10000 working hours quoted. If these are for your internal use only I would say keep it simple and consistent. If to compare with rates quoted else where then you will need to know the formula they use.
