Hi, Our company has recently purchased a fork mounted man riding basket, which will be attached to the fork truck to allow work to be completed on overhead lighting. My question is this, does the basket come under LOLER 98 and require inspection every 6 months? Thank you.

Yes, it is. Reg 9 (3) (a) (i) of LOLER is the place to look. Regards Andy

There is HSE guidance on the use of these, I would read it before using.

Send it back and hire-in proper equipment as needed. Refer to HSE Guidance Note PM28

It sounds like you are planning this activity, therefore the FLT and accessory are not appropriate for the task. Your RA should rule out its use

You should explain the area of use to assist with the query. I' assuming that this is a one off use of a forklift basket? If so, you should ensure that the environment where the forklift is going to be used is safe e.g. good underfoot conditions (good even surface capable of supporting forklift), the forklift is tested and a competent driver is used, secure the area (keep other away from task activity). You must ensure that there are no other services in the area , such as overhead electrical/telecommunication cables and that the basket is securly chained to the forklift and that hands etc cannot be caught in the mast of the forklift when its being raised and or lowererd. Check the access gate in the basket to ensure that it doesnt open inadvertently or that its not easily opened as they can be opened without the knowledge of the basket user. Then the PPE requirements need to be considered, such as fall protection etc. From my experiences your better off to get experienced contractors and or your own experienced personnel to complete this work and use specialist equipment (MEWP) where possible as the work can often be done safer and quicker in the long run.

Yes to LOLER but... There are issues surrounding the man in the basket having access to controls for lowering, rescue plan, communications with driver, locking out the fork 'tip' function, properly securing to forks, terrain and so on and should all be. A MEWP would be far preferable if cost and time allow. Best Mike
