I am in the process of drafting an integrated management system comprosing of 14001 & 18001.
One of my key objectives to to ensure the house style of the system matches the existing QMS style so we dont have to very opposing looking systems (ideally I'd like to integrate all three but thats another story), my question is that the QMS system which is currently being rewritten by the quality team has a process flow chart for each system process & sub-process which is ideal, but it also stipulates which departments are responsible, have approval, will support & who is informed for each input & output, this is done in a a tabular format with only a very brief supporting text & only at department level & not job title level.
Obviously the QMS is driven by customer satisfaction whereby both 18001 & 14001 are driven by legislation, Do you think this tabular format for defining roles, responsibilities, accountabilty & authority is sufficient for the 18001 / 14001 elements, or should I stick to some more text based definitions with signatures
Any thoughts would be appreciated

The idea of IMS is to include all your systems...as there are items that are common across all three...the roles & responsibilities piece - even as a 9001 auditor I would be looking to see in Job descriptions not just at department level. Management responsibility. There is quite a lot of work here that you can do but you need a friendly HR person to help make it happen. Getting the desired behaviours for safety, Environment and quality written into job descriptions and ergo performance contracts is a big win and will satisfy the requirements....It may be that you can use items in the QMS i.e. Corrective actions, to include in others to enable you to get the startings of total integration.
