Dear All. I currently work in Germany for HM Forces as a Civil Servant SHEF Advisor. I have been set a question by our fitter (who is competent to do monthly inspections on welding eqpt). He has looked in Germany (and I have checked on most UK sites) and we can find no information as to the following points he raised:

Is there a recommended life span of the following components:

Oxy Welding Set: Oxygen Pressure Valve, Oxy flashback arrestor, Oxy Hose, Acetylene Pressure Valve, Acetylene Flashback Arrestor, Acetylent hose.

Pulsed Arc Welder: Gas hose (from bottle to machine)

Welding Machine Arcos Mag: Gas hose (from bottle to machine)


The mandatory inspections are completed and all units work. Hoses are checked for signs of cracking etc. The question was raised as HM Forces has to comply with both Host Nation (German) and UK Regulations.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We are looking at a similar problem (MOD site) we currently only keep a register (inspect, date, maintenance) of hoses I believe.

The British Compressed Gas Association has an CoP CP7 which detail minimum safety standards for the use, inspection and maintenance of oxy-fuel gas welding, cutting and heating equipment incorporating individual portable or mobile cylinder gas supplies.

The British Compressed Gases Association code of practice CP7 recommends 5 years for regulators and flashbackarrestors or to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

The replacement interval for hoses depends a lot on the use they have had - in particular ozone and UV light are detrimental to their prolonged life.

The European body equivalent to BCGA is here http://www.eiga.org/

I suspect their recommendations are the same.

As far as I an aware there is no recommended life span however you could ask your German Regulatory Authorities (Wehrbereichsverwaltung). Also you should be aware that you are only required to apply UK legislation where reasonably practicable.
