Hi All Can anyone shed any light on whether x ray scanners fall under the IRR 1999 and therefore need RPA/RPS local rules etc. Cheers Rich

Yes and yes. Had one when I was in prison doing a 3 year stretch as the SHEF.

Under the IRR 99 Regs may become a “Radiation Employer” if the X-ray apparatuses potential difference exceeds 5kV. Reg 2(1) (b). I think it is highly likely that a baggage scanner in an airport will exceed this level. In which case there is a legal duty to consult a RPA. My own advice is to always consult with an RPA on all matters regarding work with Ionising Radiation.

Thanks all for the responses. Background is we are a facilities management company and have a resident maintenance engineer in a clients building to maintain hard services. The client has an x ray scanner which is situated in the entrance and which is operated by the clients security team and maintained by a specialist sub-contractor. We do not work on it but work physically in the location of it and may host the specialist subbie when on site. If these scanners fall within IRR 99 then i am looking at adding it my my legal register and setting out arrangements in my policy manual to manage the risks to my employee (the engineer). I will ask the client what they do and see how they are controlling this risk.
