Can anyone clarify what is an Environmental Incident for internal reporting purposes. We originally told our staff to report every hose leak or drip of oil but this in ineffective. I have since been advised that incidents for internal reporting should only be where incidents may result in significant risk to ecosystem health; or which has the potential to cause harm to people living or working in the area; or which is of or could cause concern to percolate into soils and drains.
Should envrionmental incidents be quantifiable with regards to the amount of leakage etc?
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi John,
I would agree - I would expect to have environmental issues reported internally under the following circumanstances:-
- Where there is an immediate risk to the local environment i.e. water, ground or air.
- Where there is concern about a breach or potential breach of the Operators Permit/Licence from an environmental incident
- Any leaks/spills or adverse contamintaion to ground, or to groundwater or surface water systems.
If your site has a Licence or Permit it may stipulate the conditions for reporting.

Ultimately people will only report matters when they understand the reasons for doing so and they also believe that the reports are acted upon. I also believe that to restrict reporting only to those matters with imminent risk of environmental harm means that matters that start small are invariably left until too late and damage actually occurs.
I would try some education training etc and plenty of feedback on actions taken to get your system kickstarted.
