One of the companies I visit has asked me if there is a required interval for slinger retraining? They load and unload steel onto the back of lorries with an overhead crane (They're a manufacturing firm making structural steelwork - they do not go to site, just manufacture). They have 3 trained slingers, none of their certificates have either an expiry date or a suggested re-training interval. So, do the tickets last forever? Or is there a recommended interval for re-training? I would be grateful if anyone has information or a link to where this information may be found. I've looked up the appropriate HSE guidance but other than saying trained slingers should be used I've been unable to discover if and when re-training is required

I would suggest if the certificates have no expiry date, then refresher training intervals are to be left up to the company/individual to decide upon, in the same vein as forklift truck training or food hygiene training, where there is nothing set down in legislation but best practice dictates 3 yearly.

Contact the training provider, some training providers give a recommendation on refresher training.

Hi Just looked at our craning certificates and they do not have an "expiry date" which leads me to think it is up to you to decide on the frequency unlike a FLT We recommend and carry out refresher training every 3 years. (Or sooner if there is a further need due to an Incident or long period of someone not using it)

Hi, Thanks for the responses. I thought retraining every 3 years or so would be best practice but wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something obvious! Andy
