We are being requested to start taking in sealed containers at our sites which will need the bolt seals removed by us upon arrival. To save reinventing the wheel, can someone please advise the likely issues to be considered and controlled. Thank you. Mike

It depends on how many containers you expect to handle the method to be used and also where the operator will be positioned when cutting the seals, these steel seals are extremely tough and although manual bolt croppers will do the job there can be manual handling issues especially if the container is not backed against a loading bay or platform to cut them. If the operator is at floor level all the strain will be above shoulder/head height and problems with shoulder neck and upper back problems have been reported. The cut seal can also "fly" when broken / cut hitting people in the face. Manual bolt croppers seem to quickly blunt or get damaged jaws depending on frequency of use. There is a portable powered hydraulic re bar cutter that does the job very well but is expensive at around 2.5 k however since buying this peice of kit accidents, incidents of this kind have been reduced to zero. Hope this helps

Many thanks for your input which I note with interest. It should only be two to three trailers per week, so fairly low in number. All other comments still welcome of course!
