Hello everyone I have an unusual situation whereby I need to come up with a rescue plan from nets I haven't got a scissor lift on site or cherry picker I haven't got a aluminium tower on site, I am informed due to the drop 4.3mtrs I can not lower them to the ground whilst still in the netting. Any other suggestions would be greatfully recieved

Hi Alan, As you will know, but some reading this may not, dialling 999 is not a suitable and robust system. 2 scenarios: 1. Uninjured person having fallen and been caught: Could use http://www.escape-chute-systems.com - it's a tubular system which the person enters and is dropped through like inside a sausage skin, slides through to ground level at a controlled rate. 2. Injured person: Have trained rescue team on site [not sat around waiting for a scenario but employed as trades or support staff] and first aid immediately available. Rescue team get first aid to casualty. Depending on structure supporting the net or the reason for ut being there have attachments available to hoist casualty up to safe level for recovery down ladders. Dial 999 for medical backup and the fire service may come along if the paramedics ask for them to assist. Be prepared for police attendance if ambulance is called - more and more an accident at work area is being treated as a crime scene until shown otherwise. http://www.rigsystems.co.uk/about.htm may be able to assist with training (as always the 'I have no commercial link with the company' applies. Other companies linked to IRATA will also be able help. HTH S

Hi Alan, For a quick short term solution you may be as well to hire a small scissor lift / cherry picker from a local firm ( i have details of firms local to us that provide training too ) Long term get your first aiders trained up with an evac system. If the nets are only short term (they usually are a month tops) you may be better just going down the cherry picker route. As always do the RA and see what mitigation measures you have to provide. As SNS highlighted don't rely on 999/112 as a mitigation measure. If you need details of the local firms I've used before PM me. Phil

Alan there is so many variables, are they conscious, unconscious can they get out by themselves, do they need help. They should not start work until there is an emergency plan in place the simple solution would be to get an aluminium tower (2metres high) in place before they start work, 1metre platform height plus 1metre handrail boards across the handrail with the sag of the weight in the net this should be adequate. Having had to deal with 6 falls into safety nets only one incident required cherry picker rescue and that was because of injuries before they fell into the nets, the likelyhood of an injury falling into the nets is slim and the injured person can either get himself out or be helped out by a colleague. Not knowing the site conditions plain and simple if you cannot rescue them then works cannot start. Regards Gary
