Are there any adverse health effects associated with inhalation/ingestion of used photocopier toner dust & powder. This is being released into the workplace from crushing & recycling activities?

Any dusts or powders released can have adverse health effects on any person breathing them in. I looked into the whole toner thing with pregnant employees and there is no real significant evidence to suggest any greater health effects other than already mentioned.

Yes - likely will contain carbon black which is carcinogenic to rats, may also contain other products - log on to any photocopier providers web and look at MSDS. A Full COSHH assessment is called for. The amounts discharged under normal working arrangements in an office will be negligible and unlikely to cause problems - crushing for recycling is a different matter.

My understanding is that the toner powder contains epoxy components. When the paper with the toner is heated it is the epoxy that binds the carbon toner to the paper. So inhalation, ingestion and skin exposure will all need COSHH assessment and appropriate exposure management measures. Chris
