I am going to the exhibition on Tuesday and will be wearing jeans, shoes, shirt and light jacket, I will not be wearing any tweed or be carrying a clip board! What will you be wearing???

Finest lingerie, stockings and heels under tweed. Oh no just seen it's midweek: disregard that!

Sean,
Given our past business transactions I was looking at something from our "Emperor's New Clothes" range with accessorised extra-strength smelling salts....
David - I thought that you were walking cautiously when we first met....now I know why (would the heels class you as "working at height?")

Sorry I'm not going.
I did a risk assessment and decided it was too dangerous to drive up to manchester

Just lifted this from a fashion website:
When it comes to Autumn and Winter fashion, you can never go wrong with a bit of tweed. This year especially, with popular fashion trends involving that British heritage look. Tweed will add a slightly sophisticated look to any outfit, it is also a quality fabric that will last more than one season and not to forget it will keep you warm as the days get colder. There is a lot of potential in tweed based mens clothes to generate some stylish looks.
Fashionable, sophisticated, Stylish - yep! fair description of us Safety folks, I think.

In view of the information relayed by Walker at #5, perhaps those of us who are going next week had better do some sartorial rethinking and go in tweed! Also, should we consider accessorising with leather patches on jacket elbows?!! If so, should the leather be real or faux?
REMiniscence - As a semi-serious aside, during my decade with HSE until 1987 it seemed that quite a number of safety officers (rarely if ever known as advisers in those days) at the factories and other workplaces I visited tended to wear tweed jackets rather than suits, and also to carry clipboards. I confess that for several years after leaving HSE and having always worn suits, I sometimes wore a tweed jacket (best Harris tweed of course), but never resorted to a carrying a clipboard.
p.s. Sean - hope you realise that, by including an "F" word (i.e. the name of the day between Thursday and Saturday) in your topic title, this thread is likely to be locked by tomorrow afternoon if not before!

Was Walker's website quote from a republished 1932 fashion mag?

David - it was probably more like 1922. Anyhow, using old designs and fashion is no problem provided one always uses the expression "retro look"! :-)

Whatever you'r going in, or as, don't forget to wear a conker, the (un)official emblem of iosh.

Zyggy - Having heard a recent rumour that you are going to the exhibition, do you have any plans to set up a stall to sell your "Emperor's New Clothes" range plus other bargain items that you've mentioned on this forum from time to time?
Merv - Some people might think your suggestion about conkers is simply bonkers! Also, obtaining conkers to wear at this time of year might be difficult. However, perhaps Zyggy or others know how to obtain them and could then sell them at the exhibition.

Graham; I have some conkers stashed away in the airing cupboard drying nicely ready for next season - you can't beat a wrinkled old 'laggy;'

Well, I was going to go just to catch a glimpse of David in his 'webbing'. IOSH, can the date be moved to the weekend please? If not, can somebody recommend a good counsellor? For David of course ;-)

Never been near an IOSH conference therefore no need for a new outfit. Far too busy and much too poor to even consider it.

Instead of or in addition to wearing a conker (if Stuie can bring the stash from his airing cupboard) perhaps forum users/regulars could suggest an emblem to be worn regarding our connection with this forum. Any suggestions about this? I was going to write secret emblem, but then realised that any emblem agreed on this, er, public forum wouldn't be secret. (It's a bit like the TV programme/s entitled something like "Secret places in Britain" featuring Julia Bradbury, etc. The places featured were probably fairly secret/unknown until until they were publicised on the programme/s!)
As a totally unbiased Northerner, I'll also comment that it was good to see Walker at #4 refer to "driving up to Manchester". It makes a refreshing antidote to the expression used by some people about "going up to London" even if they're travelling south to get there! :-)

Graham :- I would have though you could easily tell a forum user by their especially thick skin, which is necessary in order to take part in the forum. No need for anti-wrinkle cream for any of us, our skin can’t wrinkle, we can only crack up.
Or is this just me.

Why do you only notice the typo after hitting the post button :- "thought" not "though"

Chris - your thought about forum regulars having especially thick skin prompts me to suggest the silhouette of a rhinoceros or at least its head with distinctive horn as a badge emblem to wear at the exhibition. According to one internet source rhinoceros have skin alias dermal armour with a thickness of between 1.5 and 5 cm, so a rhinoceros emblem might be quite apt. Also, for those wanting a new word to sprinkle in their conversation, rhinoceros are described as odd-toed ungulates. :-)
