Hi - We have a situation where three employees work nights in an engineering facility with obvious machine & chemical hazards.

Non of them is a first aider & if we trained one he could still be off site or the IP.

What would you do?

- All advice welcome.

We have a similar situation, we are training them all on the 1 day emergency first aid at work course, and I don’t see any other solution. Even then some may refuse the training, and we may end up with 2 non trained engineers working together on a night. I posted almost the same question a few months ago.

Below is an extract from the HSE "suggestions" on their website.

But as always it comes down to doing the risk assessment and providing the mitigation

Does your workplace have higher level hazards, such as chemicals or dangerous machinery? Do your work activities involve special hazards, such as hydrofluoric acid or confined spaces?
■ Employees
How many people are employed on site?
The minimum provision is:
■ an appointed person to take charge of first-aid
arrangements;
■ a suitably stocked first-aid box.
You should consider:
■ providing first-aiders;
■ additional training for first-aiders to deal with
injuries caused by special hazards; ■ additional first-aid equipment;
■ precise siting of first-aid equipment; ■ providing a first-aid room;
■ informing the emergency services.
