Has any one any experience of completing works in areas known to be high in Radon. A radon specialist has given us a safe working time limit for a basement of several hours per week. If anyone has a radon policy or procedure that I could see that would be great.

Sharks Has any radon measurements actually been undertaken? Just because its in a high risk area it does not mean that Radon levels will actually be high and conversely for basement/callers there is always a risk that radon levels could be high even in areas not considered high risk. Brian

I agree with Brian - my University is allegedly within a low risk area but we have found a relatively high level in one basement area so pockets do exist. It appears that the 'map' is based on predicted levels arising from the geology and until actual readings are taken will remain so. If no monitoring has been undertaken in an area (as in our case) there will be no indication on the map. Vice versa...

Yes the company thatw e are undertaking the maintenance for had rwading staken which ststed that their employees could only access the basement for several hours each week over a 52 week cycle. My questions are does this time allowance increase if we dont need to enter the area for 52 weeks? apart from a permit to enter system and monitoring what else can be done?

The amount of time is based on exposure limits so yes it is dependant on how often you are entering the area. The problem is what other areas will your staff be working in? Is it possible that they will be exposed to other high Radon areas so difficult to work out a "safe" exposure limit on this one site info alone, what is ok for the staff working there full time may not be ok you and your staff. Radon is a complex situation and unfortunately we don't really fully understand the level of exposure to the UK workforce.

Thanks Brian, We will ensure that the ops are not re located to another radon heavy site within the 12 months. We intend to do this by a permit to enter system and a office based chart showing the exposure times of all employees.

Sharks Speak to the companies radiation adviser - if high Radon levels have been identified they should have appointed one. They should be able to give you advice based on the amount of time your staff are exposed but as I say they may be reluctant to give firm times as they will not know other radon exposure.

Sharks, One control for radon in cellars etc is ventillation (after all it is a gas). Have you investigated venting the area with an extractor before the workforce enter the area and continue while they are in there. You could also run a sump pump that operates for a short time every hour, either method should work.
