Oddly I hate the course materials.

I attended one toward the end of last year, and thought the hands on exercises were very good. Not impressed with the risk assessment method though.

Patronising gimmicky nonsense IMHO. Tedious animations. Playschool board games. Not for me thanks.

I agree with the majority of comments made but thought it was just me. I deliver the course but the delegates seem to enjoy the materials used. I do however have a problem with the risk assessment section and the hazard section, for me they seem to be in the wrong place. In the course you carryout a risk assessment at section 2 and then in section 5 we look at hazard spotting. Surely if there was no hazards then there would be no need for an assessment. I would prefer to see the two sections changed around.

I agree with the responses, particually Ron's. The "old" version was more "grown up" & I still use some of it in my own training packages

Many people appear to enjoy the course because they seem to have had such a poor expectation of health and safety training before they attend - possibly due to past experience? I find the material condescending with the cartoon characters, but I can imagine that at least it ensures a minimum standard of training wherever you attend. I'm not convinced you need to be an effective trainer or have a great depth of practical health and safety knowledge to get the participants through it!

Well said Lucy, my staff found it condescending and the cartoon characters patronising. The result is that they still treat it as a bit of a joke. Still banging my head against that particular wall.

I don't think H&S lends itself to training as a standalone subject. Perhaps an overview of corporate governance and a summary of business specific risks and controls, as a strategic overview, but that shouldn't take more than half a day. Good induction and ongoing job training and supervision is the key to a competent productive and reliable workforce.

Might work for you but not in my industry.

Good for you S Gibson! Nice and positive. Wish you all the best in delivering more courses. Its an ok course for an introduction to OHS/EMS. Must say that the RA methodology in terms of rating is questionable, however its a start and gets the mind working. No one can agree on RAs at the best of time anyway. You can always tailor the course and make it industry specific so its pretty flexible. G

Some very interesting comments,i can honestly say on arrival the delegates were apprehensive. i beleive any trainer will tell you its how you use the materials, they are only part of the whole course. By using my own past experiences and tailoring the course to security specific, the deligates soon got comfortable and enjoyed the course giving exellent feedback

Maybe if the trainers did more to promote the training in a positive manner then the participants would not find it or the contents of the materials condescending. I have delivered this course on numerous occasions to all types of managers and I have only had positive feedback. If trainers treat the materials as a joke maybe that's why the delegates continue to do so.
