Afternoon, I am hoping someone could give me some advice please, I am looking to branch out into a career in health & safety. I completed a Nebosh General certificate in February 2011 and I am looking to get into a H&S adviser role.

I am aged 24 and worked on construction/industrial sites until the age of 21. I have been employed for the last 3 years by the Fire service as an Arson reduction officer, investigating and auditing deliberate fires, but was redeployed in August 2011 to a Community fire safety officer. I have recently discovered that I suffer from mild dyslexia and I am wondering would I find it difficult doing a H&S advisers role, on say a construction site ?

I am currently awaiting conformation of Nebosh Fire Safety and Risk Management which I will be hopefully starting in June

Could anyone help me if they have encountered any issues like this before ?

Hi mance23
First thing is, you have a lot of experience that others don't have as well as your certificates. I doubt that you would have any more problems with construction than any other branch of H&S. Maybe you might want to consider the Nebosh CDM certificate. You may have to tell a prespective employer, but the main thing is don't let the dyslexia hold you back and don't forget you always have spellchecker for the reports!!!
Good Luck
Paul

Hi, I think you are right to stick with what you have experience in; fire & construction. Both should keep you busy with work. As someone who has studied dyslexia to a small extent I have a pdf which may help, see your PM inbox...

Without sounding harsh- I think you will need more than a NEBOSH Fire qualification to do fire safety work in the Teesside area, if you are aiming at Wilton/Seal Sands and other petrochemical sites.

Fire safety is usually treated as part of process engineering on COMAH sites, like wise with the EPC design offices in the Teesside/north east area

I agree, but I am looking for an H&S advisers role within a team to gain experience, I am mainly looking for a construction site but having worked on Wilton, I have some experience of these sites. I think having the Nebosh General and Fire Service Experience in a fire safety role would of given me a good chance, wouldn't you of thought so ?
