I have just applied for a H&S position near me. To be honest I do not hold much hope as they are looking for diploma, but they will consider a General Cert. Of course having no practical H&S experience does not help either, but I have nothing to lose.
Like most job hunters in any field it is gettinbg the foot on the ladder that is the hardest part.
Over the weekend I am looking at spec letters. Any other advice welcome (except voluntary / shadowing) my work shift patterns makes them impractical.

Hi Mike
Probably just stating the obvious but H&S knowledge and qualifications are one thing, understanding the industry you are in is another. Concentrate on looking for H&S opportunities in the industry you already work in, I reckon it dosen't matter how deep your H&S experience is, if you don't understand the industry, the people that work in it, or the pressures of the work they do you can't help them.
Send your spec letters to other organisations in your industry, tell them you understand their business and you will bring your H&S training and commitment to that. I've years of H&S experience in my sector but would be lost in catering, factories, shops, off-shore etc.

I have to aggree with Tom on this however I was lucky, I set myself up in business and managed to get a few contracts even though I knew very little of what they did. Over the last year its been a steep learning curve and they have been very patient but now I'm begining to settle in. You can have the H&S qualifications under the sun but if you don't know the core business and the individual processes then you are, unfortunately, on the back foot straight away. Find your specialism and stick to it, I've got a mate who specialises in maritine H&S, not the most qualified guy on the planet but he knows boats and through that hes alway busy.
hope this helps
Good luck
