Hello, My name is John Mowbray. As a chef I am very accustomed to most aspects of health & safety and I have been in considerate thought for the past few years over a career change, initially in the field of food safety inspection/technician but my prospects are hampered by a lack of a degree level of education. The Idea of a career change in the field of health & safety has always brought a high level of interest to myself. I would be most grateful if anyone is able to give me some advice on who to contact in which I am able to make enquiries to follow my desire for my career change objective. Thank you for any advice that you can supply me

Hi John - the career change you desire is exactly the route I followed, chef first, food safety next, health & safety now. In some respects it is a logical progression but you do not say if you are currently employed or not, this may have some bearing on any advice given. As in most areas of employment, you need to ensure employability with as many skills (and relevant qualifications where appropriate) as you can and with this in mind try to maintain your knowledge in the areas you already possess before embarking on gaining new skills in health & safety. As a search on this site will inform you - there are lots of people out there with varying levels of expertise, qualification and experience at present and not many jobs to go for even for the experienced. If you are set on pursuing H&S, look at training providers to see the range of courses that are available to you. Also take look at this site and see the criteria for membership levels - this will give some idea of where you need to be going in the future. Good luck in your chosen career.

I echo Bilbo's comments - been there and done that, I was a Chef in the RAF and was made redundant in 1996 after 23 years having joined at 16 with no qualifications. When I left I had 4 GCSE's, a Diploma in Food hygiene management and a 'Train the Trainer' ticket to deliver food safety courses. My first job as a civvie was pants so I walked out and moved into food manufacturing with the King of Turkeys before being made redundant again after 6 months. I did a bit of digging and was able to get some part time work delivering 1 day food safety courses and the company I was with trained me to deliver 1 day health and safety courses. I went on to another food manufacturing company and started my health and safety studies in earnest, eventually getting NEBOSH Diploma and subsequently CMIOSH. It has been a long haul with more than a few ups and downs over the past 16 years, but well worth it.
