I have recently carried out an accident investigation into a tractor overturn accident whilst grass cutting. One of the contributory factors was the gradient on which the tractor was cutting but I cannot gain any definitive information or guidance from manufacturers as to a safe angle. This is apparently due to the number of factors which may vary the safe angles or could it be a sales issue? For ride on mowers the general guidance seems to be 15 degrees but no figure for a tractor. If anyone has credible guidance could you please post a response.

There is no 'safe' angle for tractors to work on. It comes down to the right equipment and following safe working practices. Extensive details in 'Tractor Action' (INDG185) available from the HSE website under the agriculture section.

Hi, BS 4428 (Code of Practice for general landscaping), gives a angle of 1:3 (18 degrees) as the maximum gradient for "suitable tractor mounted mowers" (subject to the manufacturer's recommendations).
