Hi All; our company has just won a contract maintaining refrigeration units for a large supermarket chain; as ever this goes live in 4 weeks; could anyone point me towards some generic risk and methods I can build upon dealing with these topics please ?

Hi Kathryn, First you need to refer to the refrigeration units manual and to read carefully the safe instructions during maintenance. conduct proper task based risk assessment involving with you the technician who will carry out the task and ensure the proper isloation via lock out and tag out system. Hope this may help

Hi Kathyrn, A few other areas to consider are: Manual handling - these units can be really large and heavy. Engineers may have to move them to access the euipment at the rear. Hot works - make sure you have the sites' hot works arrangements and ensure engineers are aware of these (I've personally thrown engineers out for welding on the shop floor without a permit!) Work at height - do any of the sites have refrigeration plant on their roof? What are site procedures for accessing the roof? The public - what procedures do you have for closing off the works area on site? (eg tensabarriers, signage etc). Imagine an engineer trying to fix a compressor in the turkey fridge on Christmas Eve :-) Environment - FGAS regulations, safe handling, transport and disposal of refrigerant gas Each site will probably be different so maybe try and arrange site surveys so you and the engineers know what to expect and assess any speccific hazards. I would also check lone working assessments, will your engineers be accompanied by a member of facilities etc. Hope this helps! Lizzie

Kathryn, With all due respect, how did your company land such a contract when (based on your post) your company does not currently appear to be able to demonstrate it can manage the health and safety aspects of this task 'competently?' Simon

I don't know anything about coolers, but I have air con units on my factory site, where I have to make sure that the contractors have to be registered with ACRIB registered refrigerant handler, and I have to keep a F Gas register every time they service a unit with more than 5kg of gas
