We have a demonstration room in our company and in their there are 2 cylinders stand together (9 cu.m each) one is the acetylene and the other one is oxygen. These 2 cylinders (with falshback arrestors) are stored along with the 5 cylinders (inert gases). All cylinders are secured with chain to the wall. Ventilation is normal like what we have in the office, it is actually air conditioned. I would like to see your views (health and safety point of view) if there is really a need to remove these cylinders as the cylinders are only use during demonstration to the customer, rarely every 4 months. By the way our demonstration room has a volume of around (8 mtr x 18 mtr x 15 mtr) and it is partioned apart from our office.

Is this demo room locked to prevent tampering? Are all hte cylinders checked on a regular basis? And is the appropriate training provided to all for the event of an accidental release/ explosion?

Hi Lawlee, the cylinders are checked only before and after use of the cylinders (every 4 months?) and there is one methane cylinder (9 cu.mtr) next to the acetylene & oxygen. Also, there is electrical socket beside the cylinders whihc they use for lighting purpose.

I am a little concerned about the ventilation of the room. Are you saying that the space is adequately ventilated by the AC, and if so, is the AC intrinsically safe? As a rule of thumb, if you can smell Acetylene, then there's enough for an explosion (Explosive range about 2.5% to 80% or thereabouts). I wouldn't be happy for such cylinders to be stored in an unoccupied room for months unless it was adequately ventilated (mechanically or naturally)
