I would like to ask if anyone can either clarify or point me in the right direction of the British or European standard for external static access laddeers with hoops, to identify the type and shape of the rung/tread to be used? Currently we have, and it is an old building, a number of static access ladders with solid steel round treads. These ladders are used very infrequently and are to a height of about 4 metres. The risk assessment has identified that the ladders provided are of the right width, length and the hoop cage is correct to the access required; however, a question has been asked about the rung. Should it be square rather than round. I can see the advantage of this and it is a straightforward remedy with retrospectively fitted GRP antislip over rungs fitted to each rung, but as we have about 200+ of these and that they aren't used very often, should the investment be made to change to the square type? Of course, with some internal rungs of static ladders should we also change these too? Any help, experience of this from my peers is greatly appreciated.

Thanks JJ and I had read that before I posted....I was looking for any clarification on the ladder rung if there is any. I guess it will be down to RA then.
