Hi

I am sure that this is going to sound a silly question but can you carry out a health and safety audit internally or are you required to have an external party carry out the auditing process?

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

what type of H&S Audit is it? and to what standard are you using?

as so far both your statements are correct. if you have a management system lets say written to 18001 who need internal audits say monthly so that you, as a company can find out any short falls/failing and then can rectifiy them (first party audit).

if you then what to get accredited to 18001 by BSI etc you would then get a third party audit by them for the the certification. (fully independant of the companies work)

if you have a customer coming to audit you this would be a second party audit

Hope this helps

Hi Michele

Thanks for your reply

I have brought in a new health and safety management system and have noticed that HSG65 states that auditing is required.

Can I then audit myself so to speak?

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob

Yes you can audit if you know what to do.

Emphasis on deliverables and their quality. Auditee telling you that they do this, that and the next not enough. Get them to show you the evidence of implementation.

Hi Rob

yes, you can audit the sustem but the main rule for internal audits is do not audit your own work. so if you are incharge of one area, get someone else to audit you.

there are 1 day internal audit trianing courses out there which is the minium that i would expect for the auditor so have a look for one and go on it, it sill answer all your quesries and help you to know what you should be looking for.
