This may seem a bit of a strange question to ask on a H&S careers forum - but has anyone moved out of safety and into something new/different?
I have an engineering background and progressed into H&s almost 10 yrs ago now; sadly I am in fairly swift need of something new - I have almost given up hope of finding a H&S role so am considering 'jumping ship' so to speak.
Does anyone have any stories/advice/guidance etc that they are willing to share?
Thanks
Stuart

Hi Stuie

Sad to see you maybe considering jumping ship and looking for an alternative career. That said it is sometimes useful and refreshing to try a different path. I came out of a Public Sector role almost seven years ago, I was a Police Officer with almost 19 yrs under my belt. I left as I emigrated out to NZ and am enjoying life to the fullest. I needed, like you, a new challenge and change. I found I had gained a lot of transferable skills over the years skills that I was able to utilise in my Health and Safety career. I'm sure you have lots of excellent skills to offer a propspective employer, I was very unnerved and out of my comfort zone when my family and I decided to leave a very secure environment. However when and if you decide to make the change then do so and give it your best. You will find out a lot about yourself as I did and more importantly learn a lot about yourself some good and some not so good. I know i hvaen't probably answered your question but hopefully given you some food for thought. This is the first time I have posted on here so be kind Lol...

If someone used to work in h&s and now does something different, aren't they much less likely to be reading/using this forum?

I’m sure you have thought about these, but here goes :-

Safety Engineer – (ie engineering safety into a product)
Trainer / training – safety or otherwise (training organisation / local collage)
Something specialised – Ie fire, asbestos
Work for no win, no fee solicitor
Facilities management
Move into Quality
Move into Environmental work
QA, (also H&S and Env management systems)
Start your own institute (well it is Friday)

I tried to get help with this thought as well and went to my local careers advice centre. They were not a lot of help, they did not know what to say to me and seemed to have difficulty with the concept of moving professions. However after about an hour discussion and them thinking about it for a month, they suggested I try a web site. It asks a load of questions and gives you aptitude tests, to help suggest career possibilities ( I did it all in one go, so 3.5 hours), you need pen paper and calculator and brain turned up to max. The output was not directly helpful in suggesting career possibilities, but it did help focus my thoughts on my strengths and weaknesses. I have wasted more than 3 hours on less helpful endeavours. Your local careers advice centre may be able to help you better than mine so would not hurt. By the way when I walked in nobody was doing anything much, but I could not see anyone there and then, oh no, you have to make an appointment ( they made me wait 15 minutes before an adviser took my name and told me this).

This site was https://nextstep.direct.gov.uk however it seems the government have “improved” it so this link no longer seems to work, however the link below could be the new version.

All the best
