Hi,
On a personal note, I expressed concern at my children's nursery about a couple of aspects on fire safety.
They are being pro-active and suplied me with their Fire Risk Assessment. I am not experienced in this industry from a H&S point of view, but from what I do know, this document is well below the level I would expect. For example, there was no timelines on the actions to be taken, no PEEPs for the babies there (this nursery takes babies from 3 months), and in general not a methodical document.
Does anyone have an example of a good nursery fire risk assessment that I could show them to help them on their way - and to help keep all the precious little ones that bit safer :)
Many thanks in advance for your time and help.

I have completed a number of FRAs in nurseries and these are perhaps the toughest FRAs to complete. As customers, parents have huge expectations when they leave their kids with an educational establishment, so any FRA must be detailed and pedantic.
As far as the PEEP goes, this would not necessarily be required (as a PEEP refers to a specific person, and not a group of persons), but the premises emergency plan would need to address the issue of infant evacuation & all that goes with the movement of such a vulnerable group.
One FRA I completed was for a basement nursery in central London with no outdoor space. Taking numerous babies up stairs, then finding a place of safety with would be available from 06:30 to 20:00 (the opening times of the Nursery) was a challenge. A nearby Hotel (albeit, across a reasonably busy street) came to the rescue - for a small annual fee of £60. That was about 6 years ago. I wonder what the fee is now?
If you are not happy with the FRA or fire safety arrangements, why not pass a copy of the FRA report to the local enforcement authority for their comments. At least you can sleep at night knowing you have done the right thing
Sorry, I am unable to supply a copy of the FRA due to strict customer confidentiality arrangements

Many thanks for your input. Some interesting points - especially the basement nursery !
I understand confidentiality matters, so no problem there.

Ask them about their fire drills, THEY SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT MONTHLY and how they allocate staff to children.

I totally agree Fire drills are very important in nurseries, I would recommend a frequent routine of every three months. The reason is these infants cannot make their to an exit in the event of a fire, or even raise an alarm.
The FRA will be reviewed frequently too, and anytime a change is introduced that may affect the current arrangements.
I currently work with children services in a London LA, if you need more support with an FRA, you may PM me

My wife is a preschool playgroup leader and I did the fire risk assessment which was then passed to both Social Services and the Education Board and approved.
If you drop me an email to wjohnston19@aol.com I will send you a copy which might help them improve their standard of assessment.
