Hi, A question on CDM please, not something I am too familiar with. If we are going to install new plant on a site, fairly big pieces of automatic picking and packing equipment, and it will be over the 30 days and 500 man hours would this be notifiable and come under CDM regs? Thanks

Yes, the CDM Regulations apply: "Construction" work and it is "notifiable" due to the duration of the work. PH2

My understanding is that the installation of plant and other mechanical equipment does not fall under construction work and hence CDM does not apply. If, however, in the course of the installation of the plant and machinery structural design work is required, then it will come under the ambit of the CDM Regs, either notifiable or not, depending whether the threshold of 30 days or 500 man hours is exceeded.

Rhodesia1 I would suggest, based on the information available PH2 has answered the question (sorry Ray). Incidentally, it is 500 person days not hours!

I stand corrected, I meant 500 person days (typo) and I was confusing plant maintenence as opposed to installation - thanks SP.

What if the installation is done internally, would this still be notifiable? Or if there is assistance from internal employees (ie electricians), would you count there hours?

Kaj, the project is notifiable because it falls into the definition of "Construction" and the duration of the work. It doesn't mattter if internal electricians are invollved in the work or not: the duration is the trigger. Regards PH2
