I am dealing with a fire risk assessment in effectively a large lock & leave council garage where a small number (<10) meals on wheels vans are stored. No staff, low risk and a very tidy place of work. They have a single non maintained emergency lighting unit which, I believe must be kept as it's a windowless building. BS5266 recommends monthly checks and annual tests. With such a low risk and with the garage only occupied 15 to 25 minutes a day, I am minded to suggest that the RP tests the EL annually only and dumps the monthly checks. Of course, this is a variation of the BS, but if the reasons for the variation were recorded on the FRA, would this be suitable? Don't forget that this is a low risk premises which is empty of vehicles for 14 hours a day and empty of staff 23.5 hours a day. Any views???

Why not replace the fitting for a self test version. That way the monthly test is done by the fitting and you then simply record the status of the led indicator. The person coming into the building looks up sees the colour of the led and records the info, if its the wrong colour the defect is highlighted. ?
