Hi, I'm an easy going guy at uni on a summer placement, however the placement holds adversary attachments, in the sense of fulfilling legal requirements. But I can't stand ambivalence or any unessential behaviour from the manager. I'm prepared to fill the gaps when I leave this place but need help in acquiring the tools to do so, hence my post. I have completed risk assessment for the basic requirements of an organisation and CoSSH but don't have the access to anything else, as "this is confidential" at the organisation which I've been handed over the suumer, lame I know, however, this is the corporate world I've been trust upon! Please guys, those of the normal bearing, make my life easier to enpower what we have come to admire as a career, and as our proven future as practitioner's help out a fellow and give him the provisions for starting off as a die-hard practitioner. All I want is the tools to do a suitable and sufficienct job to fulfill my statuory duty, nothing more nothing less. Anything which can help me in the venture I would appreciate. Any tool, RA, CA, Questionaire or Audit Requirement would be a benefit to me, as long as is fit for use. Thanks Fellow Practitioners P.J.B

Hi PJ, Where, geographically speaking, are you working? Reason for the question is that it matters about who is applying the rules that the organisation should be complying with. If in the UK have a good look at the HSE website - lots of examples and leads to follow. As a summer placement would you have any responsibility for the company compliance with statutory duties? they would rest with the Directors and board at the company. Do you have a background that enables you to complete the documents you say that you have done so far to the level needed - this is not a 'dig' but a question to consider, especially as you go on to say that you are not being given access to information. Also have a look at the Health and Safety for Beginners website, lots of info there too. Good luck in your quest. regards, S

Ambivalence is at least a better starting point that outright hostility?

Sorry Ron, not sure whether thats a question or a statement? My reply is seeking a bit of clarification to better enable the direction of any following comments, as has been said on other threads perhaps we miss some inflection on screen. No hostility intended at all, however, back reading my writing in 'bullet points' can seem to be a bit of a blunt instrument. Regards, S

It's a bit of both. I think half of what I wrote I had been deleted by accident. Yes I agree outright hostility would be far worse - I make suggestions which are not arbitrary in any way to help them in making a better job for the workforce at the sharp end, but my 2 experience, or what is correct doesn't make a difference. I'm stuck in a rut with what to do as the company H&S Manager is incompetent, for example, he climbed into a machine which wasn't isolated to prove to me it wasn't safe. He isn't IOSH accredited, however, has the NEBOSH Cert. The company has the RA's in place but they're all generic, I get a check list of hazards which I have to pick from, however, some of the RA's I have been asked to complete need specific RA's and task's such as maintenance breaking down into separate RA as there are other hazards for the different activities. I know doing one RA for both activities is wrong but having a generic hazard check list to pick from is just mind boggling. I was looking for tools to help me start off when I leave university because if I ever go into another company such as this as I think I'll need to start from scratch. All I want to do is a good job.

You sound a lot better than the company you are with, and I do hope it doesnt crush your safety drive, for the time being, do what you can to the best of your ability with the limited resources/information. Stick with it, and learn from that company, make notes as to how you can improve when you finish Uni.
