We have a manufacturing department that packs cereals, flour, grains, seeds, herbs and spices from 25kg bags into 5kg, 1kg and 500g. Some of this is done by hand and some by machine. I have to do an atmospheric risk assessment. Can anyone give me any tips/advice? I've checked out the HSE website but can't find much info that applies to our business. Should I get a dust monitor? If so which sort and where from? Any help would be great Cheers

Hi Geraldine, I suspect that the dust / powder particles may be covered by the COSHH Regulations (and EH40). The fine powder / flour / grain dust may also be a potential explosion hazard (DSEAR and possibly the Regulatory Reform (Fire safety) Order Regulations). Yes, there are suitable dust monitors (e.g. Casella - others available), but from your question I would advise you to contact an experienced advisor / consultant for detailed advice on your processes, premises, controls, and training before you rush out to buy a dust monitor. I would say you need two assessments 1)health - against EH40 http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/eh40.pdf http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/mdhs/pdfs/mdhs14-3.pdf For general info see HSE CoSHH page - http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/ 2) A fire / DSEAR assessment http://www.hse.gov.uk/fireandexplosion/dsear.htm some of those dusts can behave explosively - check out
Sorry - a very quick reply, but you asked a question that asks a thousand more! Good luck
