The bosses of the car manufacturers will almost certainly have blown a gasket when they found about this... [gets coat and flees quick style]

The issue being with engine and exhaust gaskets in 23,000 imported cars. Presumably some group of unfortunates are going to be tasked with replacing them all. For those not familiar with DIY motor maintenance, this often means scraping them off by hand. A recall nightmare.

The Canadians will take 'em. They still dig the stuff out of the ground and sell it to those who want it. They also try to convince others it's a safe material.

Why don't we take them? The Control of Asbestos Regs allowed ACM's to be imported into this country for automotive use in 2006 didn't they?

I don't think so frankc (but I could be wrong). I thought restrictions applied to all but a very few things where no commercial alternative was available. Filter equipment in chlorine manufacture seems to ring a vague bell?

More info on chlorine industry here: http://www.guengl.eu/upload/Asbestos_EN.pdf (see page 19) Not filters but diaphragms apparently (but hey - filter is a damn sight easier to spell)

David - no chrysotile mining in Canada at present, and it looks like mothballed mine at Asbestos (yes, there's a town with this name) is not going to reopen. The Chrysotile Institute has recently closed its doors.

Peter, Apparently the mine owners have recently had a $58m loan to re-open the mine from the Liberal Quebec Government, however the New Quebec have also promised to ban the export of asbestos. See: http://thetyee.ca/Blogs/.../08/16/New_Quebec_Party/
